Pilates is an excellent tool for rehabilitating injuries and improving movement patterns.
Essentially it is a mind and body technique that emphasises the importance of beginning movement from a central core of stability, namely the lumbo-pelvic region.
From this central core, the Pilates method works by adjusting the intensity of each exercise through the use of differing limb movements and resistance with the use of equipment.
Clinical Pilates differs from general Pilates in that the principles and knowledge around how the movements affect your functional capabilities have been adapted and improved to increase the effectiveness of the session and overall rehabilitation/health.
The aim of Clinical Pilates is to assess the movement and control of the lower back and pelvic region, then use specific exercises to help correct and improve any imbalance.
These structured exercises use sub-maximal muscle co-contraction (gentle low-level exercises of several muscles at the same time). The focus is to teach the brain to recruit the correct muscle groups and find the correct pattern of movement, as recent evidence shows that poor control and endurance of the muscles can contribute to chronic pain-related conditions such as chronic back pain.
Here at Core Physio (Glasgow clinic only!), we have Clinical Pilates trained Chartered Physiotherapists (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy) ready to assist you with pinpointing your problem areas and tailoring an appropriate exercise and mobility program.
A Chartered Physiotherapist has the detailed anatomical knowledge and rehabilitation skills to ensure that you’re receiving the most up to date beneficial treatment for your problem, and are often involved in teaching Clinical Pilates to patients that have undergone recent surgical procedures such as hip, back and knee surgery.
